Dirty Dick’s Crab House

dirty dicksDirty Dick’s Crab was founded by Ken Hersey along with his partners, Jack Frestel and Beany Macgregor. Ken had been practising for a long time as a building developer in the Washington DC area, but in 1995 he found it appropriate to switch careers. What started as a small carry-out on a beach road at Mile Post 9 grew tremendously to become a 200-seat restaurant in Kill Devil Hills. The restaurant served great fresh seafood. Within no time, a Dirty Dick’s Crab House branch was opened in Panama City, Florida.

The restaurant’s tagline is “Seafood with a New Orleans Accent,” which should give you a pretty good idea of the fare offered here, as it all fairly well holds up to this.

Despite the rather risqué name, Dirty Dick’s still manages to rack in the numbers by the day. A good number of its patrons are children. It is a family-friendly restaurant that even features a Small Fry Stuff menu, specially tailored for diners 10 years and younger. It serves kids meals on Frisbees, which they can take home and play with on the beach. Kids can have the meatball cocktail, the fried chicken tenders, or kid burger. The specialty beverage for kids is the shark attack, which is a cup of seven-up injected with a vial of grenadine—they love watching the “blood” diffuse in the drink.

For adults, there is fresh seafood to look forward to in both the dinner and lunch menus. Dirty Dick’s mantra is “no frozen fish.”

A range of lunch servings are available at Dirty Dick’s, as well as appetizers, soups and salads, “classy stuff”, lunch baskets, and side items. Start your meal by whetting your appetite with Cajun spring rolls, smoked tuna dip, or fried pickles. For soups, Dirty Dick’s offers New England clam chowder or their award-winning gator bisque. For the main course, select from the sandwich section or the lunch basket section topped up with add-ons from the side items menu.

The dinner menu features The Steamer section which includes spiced shrimp, Jumbo Blue crabs, Alaskan crabs, and Middleneck clams all at market price. The Fryer section has chicken tenders, local oysters, stuffed crab, scallops, shrimp, and fish of the day in the Mariner’s Platter.

Dirty Dick’s also serves up beer, wine, and specialty cocktails, as well as sodas and other non-alcoholic options. If you’re feeling really brave, check out their souvenir shop and purchase a shirt with their world-famous tagline “I Got My Crabs From Dirty Dicks” and turn heads wherever you go!

Lunch and dinner patrons should expect to spend about $25 per person.
